Welcome to a special, feature episode of The Habañero Hour dedicated to introducing you to the music and story of The Trees Community. This is the first of what we hope to be many “feature” episodes dedicated to a single artist, style of music or subject matter.
Though largely unknown for years, the Trees Community might now be considered to have been pioneers of the “freak folk” movement. The original “Christ Tree” album was released in 1975 and has remained out-of-print almost since that time. Tim Renner’s Dark Hollow and Hand/Eye labels not only re-released the album but a box set of previously unreleased material.
The band lived together in a New York loft, organizing themselves as a monastic order and playing music. They considered themselves to be much more than a band, but a way of life.
From their website:
“The Trees” were a Christian, contemplative community and a music group. Based at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City, our traveling life in the 1970’s was shared publicly, across America and Canada, through original music as well as through other forms of service to others
We had the privilege of interviewing three members of the Trees Community and we have woven segments of those interviews with songs to introduce you to this great band. We hope you enjoy meeting The Trees Community. We know we have:

The Habañero Hour is the occasional music/interview podcast of Brent Thomas and Mark Whiten dedicated to exploring, dissecting, examining and challenging the idea of “Christian” music.
Years ago, we came across an article on Reuters examining the idea that most of what is known as “Christian” music is not labeled so due to content but marketing. This set us on a never-ending journey to discover artists expressing their faith outside of the Christian marketing industry. Along the way we share lots of music with you and we get to talk to some of the artists making the music we love
Enjoy:
Episode 09 Tracklist:
Featured artist Waterdeep, music from Lightheaded, Aaron Ivey, Tyler James, The Autumn Film and more. Welcome to The Habañero Hour Episode 08.
Basically, this whole podcast thing started with two guys who love Jesus and love music but don’t love most “Christian” music. We were convinced that, not only were there others who felt the same way, there were artists out there who were expressing their faith in bodies of work never played on “Christian” radio or sold in “Christian” stores. We were right. The Habañero Hour exists to explore, excavate, broaden, and challenge the idea of what is or is not “Christian” music. We do this by exposing you to some of the music that we’ve discovered and we try to include perspectives from some of the actual artists we play. Most of the music we play is made by Christians but some of it is not and that is intentional. We want to rekindle the lost art of discernment. Please join us on this journey.
Here is the setlist. Enjoy and please offer feedback to help us get better at this.
Please help spread the word.

Featured artist is Trevor Davis from Tacoma and features music from John Mark McMillian, Thrice, Brooks Ritter and others. Enjoy.
See, we love Jesus, we love Christians, we love music, we just don’t love most “Christian” music. Most of what you can buy at “Christian” retailers has nothing to do with content but everything to do with marketing. Must “Christian” music is a vapid, propaganda-driven, shallow reproduction of what the rest of the world had to offer about six months ago.
But there is hope. There are plenty of artists expressing their faith under the radar. That’s the point of this podcast. Through music and interviews with featured artists, we hope to expand your musical horizons and introduce you to some of our favorite artists, all the while, challenging the very notion of “Christian Music.”
